Three Global Disruptions. One Common Impact — Higher Risk, Longer Transit & Rising Logistics Costs
Dear Valued Customer,
Global shipping markets continue to face pressure from a combination of geopolitical developments, weather disruptions and infrastructure constraints.
This week, we highlight three developments that may have an impact on international cargo movement and shipment planning.
1️⃣ WEST ASIA — GEOPOLITICAL & SHIPPING RISK
The ongoing conflict involving Iran continues to affect commercial shipping movements around the Strait of Hormuz and wider Middle East region.
The disruption is creating uncertainty around vessel movements, routing, fuel costs and overall operating expenses. The situation is also having a wider impact on global freight markets, with Indian exporters facing pressure from higher freight costs and logistics disruptions.
Potential impact:
• Vessel routing and schedule uncertainty
• Higher bunker and war-risk related costs
• Possible changes in sailing schedules
• Longer transit times on affected routes
• Increased freight volatility on Middle East-related trade lanes
For shipments to UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and other West Asian destinations, advance planning and current sailing confirmation are recommended.
2️⃣ CHINA — TYPHOON DOLPHIN & PORT CONGESTION
Typhoon Dolphin has caused significant disruption across Shanghai and Ningbo, with port operations affected and shipping lines now working through accumulated vessel and cargo backlogs.
Although operations are gradually recovering, residual congestion remains. Recent industry updates indicate vessel waiting times of several days at both Shanghai and Ningbo, with schedule recovery expected to take time.
Potential impact:
• Vessel delays and schedule changes
• Container/equipment availability pressure
• Booking rollovers
• ETD / ETA changes
• Longer transit-time risk
• Congestion-related operational delays
Importers with cargo originating from Shanghai, Ningbo and surrounding East China gateways should allow additional buffer when planning August shipments.
3️⃣ PANAMA CANAL — TRANSIT COSTS SURGE
The Panama Canal is facing renewed pressure as El Niño-related water constraints combine with increased demand caused by disruption to alternative global shipping routes.
Transit costs and auction prices for scarce canal slots have surged sharply, with some vessels reportedly paying millions of dollars to secure priority passage. Waiting times have also increased as available capacity comes under pressure.
Potential impact:
• Higher canal transit costs
• Longer waiting times
• Increased routing costs
• Pressure on vessel schedules
• Potential knock-on effect on global freight rates
This demonstrates how disruption in one major shipping corridor can quickly create pressure on alternative global trade routes.
📌 ESKAY’S VIEW
The shipping market is becoming increasingly sensitive to disruption.
Today, freight planning cannot be based on rate alone.
Customers should also consider:
✓ Vessel reliability
✓ Equipment availability
✓ Port congestion
✓ Transit-time risk
✓ Routing options
✓ Potential additional costs
A slightly higher freight rate with confirmed space, reliable equipment and a stable sailing schedule may ultimately be more economical than a cheaper rate followed by rollover, delay, storage or detention costs.
