NEPAL FLOODS DISRUPT INDIA–NEPAL TRADE

Dear Valued Customer,

Cross-Border Cargo Movement Faces Delays Across Key Sectors

Severe flash floods in Nepal are creating fresh challenges for India–Nepal cross-border trade, with cargo movement affected by damaged roads, disrupted connectivity and congestion at key border corridors.

🚛 Around 16 km of Indian cargo trucks were reported queued at the Sonauli border, as connectivity further inside Nepal remained disrupted.

🔴 SECTORS MOST EXPOSED

⛽ Petroleum & Fuel
Petroleum products are among India’s largest exports to Nepal, with refined petroleum imports exceeding US$2.2 billion in 2025. Prolonged road disruption could put additional pressure on fuel distribution.

🏗️ Iron, Steel & Construction Materials
India exported approximately US$724 million of iron and steel to Nepal in 2025. Delays could impact construction activity and infrastructure projects.

🚗 Automobiles & Machinery
India’s 2025 exports to Nepal included approximately US$479 million in vehicles and US$506 million in machinery — high-value cargo categories particularly sensitive to border congestion and delivery delays.

🌾 Food & Agricultural Commodities
Cereal exports from India to Nepal were worth around US$410 million in 2025. Extended transit disruptions could put pressure on market inventories and timely replenishment.

💊 Pharmaceuticals & Essential Goods
India exported approximately US$250 million of pharmaceutical products to Nepal in 2025. These time-sensitive supply chains require predictable transportation and replenishment.

📊 WHY THIS MATTERS

India is Nepal’s largest trading partner, with bilateral merchandise trade reaching approximately US$9.38 billion in FY2025–26.

With Nepal’s landlocked supply chain dependent heavily on a limited number of road and rail corridors, any disruption can quickly translate into:

• Longer transit times
• Border congestion & truck detention
• Higher inventory carrying costs
• Route diversions & additional transportation costs
• Potential delivery delays and penalties

💡 ESKAY GLOBAL LOGISTICS ADVISORY

For businesses moving cargo to or from Nepal, it is important to monitor border conditions closely and plan sufficient transit-time buffers.

Alternate routing, multimodal transportation and proactive shipment planning can help reduce the impact of prolonged cross-border disruptions.
